Matthew S. Butterfield, MD
Matthew S. Butterfield, MD, is a sports medicine fellowship-trained and board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic and open reconstruction of the knee and shoulder, total joint replacement, and fracture care. His special interests of the shoulder include primary and revision rotator cuff repair, instability, and arthroplasty. His special interests of the knee include primary and revision ACL reconstruction, meniscus and cartilage preservation and repair, patellofemoral realignment, and arthroplasty.
Dr. Butterfield grew up in Ohio and is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. After orthopedic residency training in Florida, he relocated to Minnesota for sports medicine fellowship training. He and his wife live in the western suburbs of Minneapolis with their two young daughters. As a family, they stay active with children’s activities or sports and enjoy exploring Minnesota traditions and state parks. Dr. Butterfield has interests in international travel and cooking, cycling, and alpine skiing.

Sports medicine, including athletes of any age, ACL tear, meniscus tear, rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability/dislocation, and shoulder labrum tear
Shoulder care, including arthroscopic shoulder surgery, primary and revision rotator cuff repair, biceps tendon injury, shoulder instability surgery (including bankart repair, SLAP repair, and bone loss procedures), minimally invasive shoulder replacement (including total shoulder and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty), EXCEL total joint program, arthritis, and fracture care
Knee care, including arthroscopic knee surgery, primary and revision ACL reconstruction, meniscus tear, minimally invasive knee joint replacement (including partial or unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty), EXCEL total joint program, MCL injury, osteotomy, patellofemoral realignment, meniscus preservation, cartilage restoration, arthritis, and fracture care
Ankle care, including fracture care, Achilles tendon repair, and ligament reconstruction and repair
Elbow and wrist care, including fracture care and distal biceps tendon injury/repair
Hip care, including fracture care and proximal hamstring injuries

About
Katie McLaughlin, PA-C, is a board-certified Physician Assistant working in conjunction with Dr. Butterfield to coordinate excellent orthopedic patient care. Katie sees patients in the clinic setting, performs injections, first assists in the operating room, and helps with the postoperative care and orthopedic management of patients. She also evaluates patients with acute injuries in our Orthopedic Urgent Care.
In addition to working with Dr. Butterfield’s team, Katie also works with the spine team and will sees patients for spine, neck, and back injuries or issues.
