ACL Reconstruction FAQ
ACL tears are unfortunately common in our younger competitive athletes, as well as our recreational athletes. Surgical reconstruction is generally considered for anybody who wishes to return to cutting, pivoting, jumping / landing activities. Dr. Schmiesing preferred technique is a quadriceps autograft. There are also new additional procedures and considerations when trying to prevent reinjury.

General Pre-Op FAQ
There are many common questions prior to surgery, many of these are surrounding the logistics of the surgery day and ensuring every thing is taken care of before hand, including a pre op history and physical.

Meniscus Tears FAQ
There are different types of meniscus tears. We think about them in terms of whether the meniscus tear has a potential to heal or not. When possible, meniscus repair is best for your knee long term versus removing the torn fragments. Meniscal root tears are their own set of tears which require consideration of surgical treatment.

Rotator Cuff Repair FAQ
Rotator cuff tears are quite common, and more common as we age. Surgery to repair the tendon back to bone can be helpful to resolve pain and return function. There are many considerations when deciding on the right treatment for rotator cuff tears.

Shoulder replacement comes in two types, both anatomic and reverse shoulder replacement. Anatomic shoulder replacement can be an excellent surgery but might not be right for everybody. Reverse shoulder replacement is typically done for patients who have rotator cuff issues, or for patients with bone loss.

Joint Replacement Pain Management
Pain management after any surgery is key. Using many different types of pain management strategies tends to be the best approach. This may include rest, ice, elevation, OTC medications, muscle relaxers, with narcotic medications being used only as needed.
