TCO Baseball Medicine Conference on Nov. 3
The World Series wraps just days earlier, but November still is a good time to be talkin’ baseball. America’s pastime – throwing, in particular – will be the topic of discussion at the Twin Cities Orthopedics Baseball Medicine Conference on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Training HAUS in Eagan.
The accredited course is designed specifically for therapy, training and medical professionals. Hear from TCO physicians, physical therapists and St. Paul Saints athletic trainer Jason Ellenbecker, ATC, about the physician’s evaluation of the thrower, radiographic imaging, the physical therapist’s evaluation and treatment of the thrower, getting the thrower back on the field, as well as other hot topics around the game.

Guest speakers
Dr. Gregory Lervick: Greg Lervick, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in shoulder and elbow injuries and conditions. Dr. Lervick specializes in shoulder arthroscopy, shoulder instability surgery, rotator cuff repair, total and reverse total shoulder replacement, elbow surgery, Tommy John surgery and elbow arthroscopy. Dr. Lervick received his subspecialty certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 2007. He currently serves as a team physician for the Minnesota Vikings.
Dr. Steve Meisterling: Steven Meisterling, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who holds a subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He specializes in arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, and elbow; joint replacement of the knee, hip, and shoulder; and elbow reconstruction. Dr. Meisterling completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, with Dr. James Andrews. He received his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, Nebraska, and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Meisterling is an orthopedist with special interests and advanced training in sports medicine. He has presented oral and poster presentations at national orthopedic meetings and is periodically published in orthopedic medical journals. He currently serves as the team physician for the St. Paul Saints.
Dr. Edward Kelly: Edward Kelly, MD, MBA specializes in arthritic, traumatic, and sports injuries to the shoulder, elbow and knee. Dr. Kelly is fellowship trained in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and elbow. He has a certificate of added qualifications in sports medicine and has served as a faculty member for the MOSMI Sports Medicine fellowship program since 2009. Dr. Kelly also serves as the lead team physician for the University of St. Thomas men’s and women’s athletic teams.
Dr. Hollis Fritts: Hollis M. Fritts, MD, is a board-certified musculoskeletal radiologist at the Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI). Dr. Fritts graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed a radiology residency and MRI fellowship at the University of California, Irvine. He specializes in musculoskeletal and sports medicine imaging. Fritts has authored and co-authored many articles in professional journals that include Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, American Journal of Roentgenology, and Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRI. He authored a chapter entitled, “MRI and Shoulder Imaging” in Dr. Richard Hawkins’ book, Shoulder Injuries in the Athlete: Surgical Repair and Rehabilitation.
Mike Dixey, PT, PES, CSCS: Mike Dixey has been practicing physical therapy in the Twin Cities since 1997. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1997 and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from the College of Saint Scholastica in 2013. He is certified as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). He served as the coordinator of the Throwers’ Injury Program for the Institute for Athletic Medicine prior to joining Twin Cities Orthopedics. He currently serves as the Throwing Program lead for Twin Cities Orthopedics’ Edina clinic. Mike has spoken both nationally and internationally and has treated players from multiple MLB teams.
Mike Muffenbier, MPT, SCS: Mike Muffenbier is co-owner of Accelerated Sports Therapy & Fitness. He is a board certified sports physical therapist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Prior to co-founding Accelerated Sports Therapy & Fitness, Mike was the Clinic Supervisor of the Minnesota Sports Medicine clinic in Eden Prairie, where he also was the Director of the Physical Therapist Sports Residency Program. Under Mike’s leadership, the sports residency became only the fifth program in the country to be awarded credentialed status by the American Physical Therapy Association. Mike created and coordinated two specialized patient care programs: the Next Step Program, a post-rehab L/E training program and a Throwers’ Injury Program, which provided specialized evaluation and treatment of overhead throwing injuries. Mike has provided continuing education courses nationwide. He has lectured to more than 1,000 health care professionals on various physical therapy and sports medicine topics, such as shoulder dysfunction, throwing injuries and rehabilitation, patellofemoral dysfunction and exercise prescription and progression. He was also co-author of book chapters addressing shoulder injuries in young athletes (Sports Medicine for Young Athletes, published Fairview Press) and strength training for older adults (Staying Strong: A Senior’s Guide to a More Active and Independent Life, Fairview Press).
Braidy Solie, PT, SCS, CSCS: Braidy Solie is a board-certified sports physical therapist at Training HAUS. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from the University of North Dakota and is one of the few residency-trained sports physical therapists practicing in Minnesota. His background includes working with athletes of all ages and skill levels, including those at the collegiate and professional level of sport. He has a personal interest in injury prevention and the rehabilitation of athletic injuries to the shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle. Braidy has a passion for optimizing sports performance through a hands-on and individualized approach; combining the latest research, strength and conditioning concepts, sports technology, and rehabilitation techniques.
Brian Holst, PT, SCS, CSCS: Brian Holst is a board-certified sports physical therapist at Twin Cities Orthopedics Vadnais Heights . He graduated from Texas Woman’s University’s physical therapy program located within the renowned Texas Medical Center in 2016. He also completed a sports residency program working with high school, collegiate and professional athletes focused primarily in the care of overhead athletes. During his time with Houston Methodist he had affiliations with Rice University baseball and football, the Houston Dynamo and notably spent two months during spring training with the Houston Astros assisting their rehabilitation team at the start of the 2017 season. Brian is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He has particular areas of interest in the treatment of overhead athletes as well as optimizing return to sports utilizing blood flow restriction therapy.
Lenny Macrina, MSPT, SCS, CSCS: Lenny has been a practicing physical therapy since 2003 and currently serves as the co-founder and director of PT at Champion Physical Therapy and Performance in Waltham, Mass. Prior to returning to Massachusetts to work alongside Mike Reinold, he had worked with renowned orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, MD, and prominent physical therapist Kevin Wilk. Through these interactions, he has grown to be well-respected in the field of orthopedic and sports medicine rehabilitation. His interests include research and rehabilitation of the shoulder, elbow and knee joints. He has successfully treated many orthopedic and sports medicine related injuries that are both post-operative and non-operative in nature, in recreational athletes to the high-level professional athletes. Lenny is a board-certified sports physical therapist by the ABPTS and a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In 2010, he was nominated by his peers to be included in the prestigious American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society which includes top fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists. In 2016, he was inducted into the ICCUS Society, which is a group of clinicians, educators, and researchers in the field of sports rehabilitation with the goal to continue to foster the advancement of the field of sports rehabilitation. He has co-authored various current concept papers, book chapters, research papers and a home study course for the APTA’s Orthopaedic section. He has been a peer reviewer for the esteemed JOSPT and has reviewed rehabilitation textbooks and research papers for that journal. He has published articles in journals including the AJSM, JOSPT, Journal of Sports Health, Journal of Athletic Training, CORR, Operative Techniques in Sports Medicine, and many others. He has presented at various national conferences including APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting, ASMI’s “Injuries in Baseball Course.” Macrina received his bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and his master’s degree in physical therapy from Boston University.
Christian Dawson, PT: Christian Dawson is a physical therapist who currently practices at Training HAUS. He graduated from Otago University New Zealand with a degree in physiotherapy, earning honors as top clinician in his class. His clinical interests include using manual therapy techniques with both sport and spine rehab. Dawson has worked with professional athletes in both injury prevention and rehabilitation roles.
Courtney Kovacs, PT, DPT: Courtney Kovacs is a physical therapist for Twin Cities Orthopedics Maple Grove. She graduated with her doctor of physical therapy (DPT) degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and a bachelor’s degree in movement science from Winona State University, where she pitched for four years. As a former college athlete, Kovacs has a special interest in sports medicine and rehabilitation of the shoulder and knee. She leads the throwing program for Twin Cities Orthopedics’ Maple Grove clinic. The Twin Cities Orthopedics Interval Throwing Program integrates the most current concepts in injury prevention with research-based return to throwing progressions.
Russell Linville, PT, OCS, SCS, CSCS: Russell Linville is a dual-credentialed, board-certified orthopedic and sports physical therapist. He earned his bachelor of science in health, physical education, and exercise science at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and his doctorate of physical therapy at Franklin Pierce University in Goodyear, Arizona. He completed his sports medicine physical therapy residency at Proaxis Therapy in conjunction with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas with an internship with the Cleveland Indians during spring training. He is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a certified strength and conditioning specialist. His clinical interests include UCL reconstruction, Little League elbow/shoulder, rotator cuff pathology, ACL reconstruction, hip labral repair, and many other pathological and post-operative diagnoses.
Jason Ellenbecker, ATC: Jason Ellenbecker currently serves as the head athletic trainer for the St. Paul Saints. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a bachelor of science in athletic training. He worked for the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons from 2004-2006. Jason then went to Hamline University where he served as the head athletic trainer prior to joining Twin Cities Orthopedics. Jason has worked with multiple sports, including the 2011 Hamline Baseball team that won the MIAC conference tournament.
Mason Reinhart: Mason Reinhart currently serves as an associate strength and performance coach at Twin Cities Orthopedics. He also heads the Core/Strength/Agility Program for Down Angle Baseball. He earned a B.A. in Kinesiology at Concordia University in St. Paul, where he was a four-year starter on the baseball team. He is National Academy of Sports Medicine CPT and CES certified and brings more than 11 years of experience in personal training, sports performance and coaching to TCO. Presently, he plays competitive amateur baseball for the Minneapolis Cobras of the Park National League.
Weston Germain: Weston Germain is the pitching coach for the Hamline University baseball team. He also serves as the pitching coach for the Grand Lake Mariners of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. Germain previously was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Germain has been coaching since 2009, with positions at the high school level, including head freshman coach, head junior varsity coach, varsity assistant and head varsity coach. Most of this time was spent at his prep alma mater, Bay City Western, which is one of the top high school baseball programs in Michigan. As a player, Germain helped Muskegon Community College to its first conference championship in school history, while setting the school record for wins and serving as a team captain. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in education from Saginaw Valley State University.
Chris Olean: Chris Olean will enter his 10th year as head coach of the University of St. Thomas baseball in 2018-19. He has established himself among the top coaches in Division III with a 275-120-1 record (.700 win %) and seven MIAC championships in his first nine seasons, including third-place national finishes in 2012 and 2014. He was voted conference and Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Olean was a nine-year assistant at St. Thomas from 2001-09 under legendary coach Dennis Denning. Chris was a key member of Denning’s staff that guided St. Thomas to NCAA Division III National Championships in 2001 and 2009, along with an unprecedented seven straight MIAC conference titles from 2003-2009. While an assistant, Olean’s pitchers led the conference in ERA in eight of his nine seasons, and finished in the top 10 nationally in ERA in in four of nine seasons. Olean has also coached six pitchers who have gone on to play professionally, along with seven All America pitchers.
As a Tommie pitcher, Olean was a three-time All-MIAC selection, a three-time All-Midwest Regional selection, and member of the 1999 Division III World Series All-Tournament team. His Tommie teams won the MIAC conference title all four seasons and compiled a 152-32 record during his era as a player. In his senior season, the two-time team captain finished second in Division III in ERA (0.60) and finished with 97 strikeouts to only six walks while leading the Tommie’s to their first College World Series appearance. He was also named the MIAC Player of the Year and a first team All-America. He finished his career with the modern school career strikeout record (246 Ks in 248 innings), and his 24-8 career mark included a 15-1 record in conference play. He was inducted into the University of St. Thomas Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Olean was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th round of the 1999 amateur draft, and spent two seasons in their organization playing in Ogden, Helena, and Beloit. He also played one season with the St. Paul Saints. Olean continues to pitch in amateur baseball with the Miesville Mudhens.
