Dr. Matthew Rasmussen will begin his practice at TCO on Tuesday, September 2nd.
Dr. Matthew Rasmussen is a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, committed to bringing advanced, minimally invasive treatments to the Twin Cities and surrounding area. Skilled in arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, hip, and knee as well as soft-tissue reconstruction and trauma management, Dr. Rasmussen delivers tailored treatment pathways designed to help patients restore movement, prevent re-injury, and return to an active lifestyle. Driven by a patient-centered and community-focused philosophy, Dr. Rasmussen partners with each patient to create individualized, evidence-based recovery plans—blending surgery or non-operative treatments with structured rehabilitation and patient education—so individuals of all ages can get back to doing what they love.
Dr. Rasmussen graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Following graduation, Dr. Rasmussen worked as a researcher and engineer at the world-renowned Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado, where he contributed to groundbreaking studies in joint preservation, bench-to-bedside surgical technique development, and surgical outcomes. His work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals and presented at local, regional, national, and international conferences. He is proud to have been a part of the team that was awarded the prestigious Excellence in Research Award in 2014 by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). This research background continues to shape his approach to patient care, ensuring each treatment is informed by the latest evidence and techniques.
After earning a medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Rasmussen completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While there, he was able to work with the Eastern Michigan University and University of Michigan athletic departments which included the University of Michigan football team during their 2023 National Championship season. Following residency, Dr. Rasmussen pursued further specialized training in sports medicine at Twin Cities Orthopedics where he focused on complex treatment of shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle sports-related injuries. During his fellowship, he was able to assist with sports coverage for St. Anthony Village High School, Augsburg University (Div III), the St. Paul Saints (Twins AAA affiliate), the Minnesota Twins (MLB), and the Minnesota Vikings (NFL).
Dr. Rasmussen is excited to return and practice in his home community. He is grateful for the opportunity to care for the people of this great state and to give back to the community that shaped him. Outside of work, he enjoys running, hiking, camping, and spending time with his wife and daughter at the cabin, which keep him active and connected to the vibrant lifestyle he strives to help his patients maintain.
