Practice Overview

Taylor Freetly, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in arthroscopic and open reconstruction of the knee, shoulder and hip, total joint replacement of the knee and shoulder, and fracture care. His clinical interests in the knee include ACL injuries, PCL injuries, MCL injuries, posterolateral corner injuries, multiligamentous knee injuries, meniscus injuries, cartilage procedures, patellofemoral instability and osteotomies. His clinical interests in the shoulder include rotator cuff injuries, shoulder instability, and shoulder arthroplasty. In the hip, his clinical interest is arthroscopic hip surgeries.

Dr. Freetly grew up in Kerkhoven, Minnesota. He obtained his undergraduate degree from St. John’s University, Minnesota. He received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He then completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Minnesota. He received further specialization in sports medicine during his Sports Medicine Fellowship with Twin Cities Orthopedics where he received advanced training in complex knee, shoulder, and hip surgeries.  During his fellowship, he had the opportunity to provide sideline coverage for St. Anthony Village High School, Augsburg University (Division III), Minnesota Twins (MLB) and Minnesota Vikings (NFL). He currently provides sideline coverage for Champlin Park High School Football.

In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor activities, fitness, golfing, spending time on the lake in the summer, and traveling with his family. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys following Minnesota sports teams.

Clinical Interest

Knee care, including primary and revision ACL reconstructions (including pediatric), PCL injury, posterolateral corner injuries, MCL and posteromedial corner injuries, multiligament knee injuries, patellar and quadriceps tendon repairs and reconstructions, meniscal repairs (ramp, root, radial, bucket-handle, or horizontal), patellofemoral instability (including MPFL reconstruction, trochleoplasty, and tibial tubercle osteotomies), cartilage preservation and restoration including osteochondral autograft transfer (OATS), osteochondral allografts (OCA or open or arthroscopic autologous chondrocyte implantation), knee osteotomies (including distal femoral, high tibial, and tibial tubercle).

Shoulder care, including rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability/dislocations (labral injuries), shoulder separation injuries (AC and CC ligament injuries), proximal biceps injuries, arthroscopic distal clavicle excision, shoulder arthritis including anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement, and navigation assisted shoulder replacement.

Hip care, including hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement with labral tears, abductor tendon injuries, proximal hamstring injuries.

Elbow care, including distal biceps injuries, triceps injuries, medial and lateral epicondylitis (golfer’s/tennis elbow), and treatment of the overhead athlete including ligament, tendon, cartilage and bony injuries.

Sports medicine care, including surgical and non-surgical care of sports related injuries in athletes of all ages.

Pediatric care, including physeal sparing ACL reconstruction, tibial spine avulsion injuries, MPFL reconstruction, management of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions, and treatment of upper and lower extremity sprains, strains, and common fractures.

Fracture care, including fractures of the clavicle, proximal humerus, patella, tibial plateau, and ankle.
