Difference Makers: Edina pair’s singing relaxes patient
We’d like to introduce you to dual Difference Makers Kari Fernholz and Sara Maronde, whose songful approach to care led to others singing their praises and a “You Made a Difference” award for the pair.
Kari, a physician assistant, and Sara, a clinical assistant, at our Edina – Crosstown location, helped a patient who needed assistance using the restroom ahead of an appointment. The patient was nervous in the presence of others and asked if the duo could sing something to make them less anxious. Without hesitation, the two sang “Jingle Bells” and put the patient at ease.
Let’s get to know more about Kari and Sara!
What’s your role?
Kari: As a physician assistant with Dr. David Anderson, I assist in the operating room and see patients in the clinical setting. We see all orthopedic issues but focus on sports medicine and total joint replacement.
Sara: As a clinical assistant, I assist the physician team to help their clinic run smoothly, as well as assist patients with questions, wound care, casts/splints and other items.
What’s your favorite thing about working at TCO?
Kari: My favorite thing about working at TCO is the team approach. I work closely with my supervising physician, care coordinator and clinical assistant to maximize each patient visit.
Sara: I enjoy working in a team dynamic at TCO – mixing hard work with some fun.
How do you make a difference?
Kari: I feel that everyone at TCO goes that extra mile to make a difference. I try to make patients feel comfortable and understand their diagnosis and treatment plan.
Sara: I make a difference by adapting to each situation and patient when needed. Small things can make someone’s day!
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
Kari: I love to travel, golf and follow sports – especially Minnesota teams (Skol, Vikings!).
Sara: I enjoy dancing and outdoor activities such as biking or hiking.
What’s one place in the continental U.S. you’ve never been where you’d like to travel?
Kari: I would love to travel to Northern California.
Sara: I would like to travel to the redwood forests in Northern California.
