ROSEMONT, Ill. (Oct. 6, 2014) – J. Chris Coetzee, MD, MBChB, of Minneapolis-based Twin Cities Orthopedics, has been appointed to a two-year term as treasurer of the 2,100-member American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS). Coetzee will focus on supporting the global research and educational efforts of the Society, whose members specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders of the foot and ankle.

“We are entering an exciting decade where orthopaedic foot and ankle issues will receive more attention,” Coetzee said. “People are more active now than ever, and injuries, whether acute or from overuse, will become more prevalent. The AOFAS is ideally situated to address the increasing demand for well-trained orthopaedic surgeons to deal with these issues, and we are looking forward to contributing to the general health of all generations.”

In addition to his work with Twin Cities Orthopedics, Coetzee is a clinical associate professor at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Coetzee earned his medical degree from the University of Pretoria School of Medicine in South Africa, and performed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa. He also completed a fellowship in foot and ankle orthopaedics at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center in Seattle as well as a trauma fellowship in Davos, Switzerland. He is an assistant editor of the AOFAS peer-reviewed journal Foot and Ankle International and a reviewer for other orthopaedic journals.

Having long supported the educational mission of the AOFAS, Coetzee served as the chair of the 2014 AOFAS Annual Meeting last month, an event which drew more than 1,200 attendees from 48 countries. Coetzee has also chaired AOFAS committees and moderated webinars, and in 2013 chaired the AOFAS Surgical Complications Course.

About Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons
