Practice Overview
Michael R. Johnson, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery, sports injury treatment, carpal tunnel release and other hand surgeries, rotator cuff repair, and fracture management. He uses minimally invasive and pain-modulating techniques to assist in recovery, so patients can return to activity safely and comfortably. Dr. Johnson believes it’s important to get to know his patients and understand their stories. He strives to ensure his patients understand their orthopedic diagnosis, treatment options, and recovery timeframe in a respectful, compassionate, and patient-centered atmosphere.
Dr. Johnson is a graduate of St. John’s University with a degree in biology. He continued his education by earning a medical degree at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He went on to complete his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Minnesota, with a subsequent orthopedic surgery practice at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing. Dr. Johnson enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and three kids. His hobbies include playing golf, coaching basketball, and traveling.

Dr. Michael Johnson did my first knee replacement here in Red Wing. I only needed a partial. He did an outstanding job. My quality of life was improved. I could hike and walk again pain free. When my other knee failed, I knew I wanted Dr. Johnson to do the surgery on this knee as well. Dr. Johnson is now with TCO and there was no question that I would follow him to the Twin Cities. It has been 7 weeks since my surgery and I feel strong and confident. Dr. Johnson listened and answered all my questions. Jen, his Clinical Care Coordinator is very professional and helpful as well. I am grateful for the outcome of my surgery and am looking forward to an active summer with hiking and biking.

I had the distinct privilege of having received a left shoulder replacement from Dr. Johnson. From the first meeting with his nursing assistant, Jen Perillo, I knew I had found staff that would be supportive through the process of the shoulder replacement. Though, through no fault of Dr. Johnson, the replacement separated, and the surgery had to be replaced again. The second surgery was successful. Through the after care, Dr. Johnson and Ms. Perillo showed the ultimate in care and concern. The recovery process has been slow and steady with consistent follow-up from the surgeon and nursing staff. If you should be so fortunate to schedule surgery through Dr. Johnson’s office, you will find some competent and caring professionals.

I was seen by Dr. Johnson for what the ER stated was a ruptured achilles tendon. Upon my first appointment, Dr. Johnson was very personable and did a thorough exam of my left calf and achilles. He informed me that it was not my achilles, it was my calf and that he wanted me to have an MRI to see where the calf tear/strain was. My first MRI was denied and Dr. Johnson had a peer-to-peer eval with my insurance company and was able to get my MRI approved. Dr. Johnson has been a pleasure to work with out of both the Woodbury and Eagan locations. I would recommend him to anyone that needs his assistance. After about two months of PT and follow up appointments with Dr. Johnson, I am heading back to work! Thanks again for a pleasurable experience.

Dr. Michael R. Johnson is a great asset to the TCO community. I immediately felt I was in the best of hands. He has extensive experience in hip replacement surgery, explains things well and has a caring bedside manner. Dr. Johnson gave me a hip injection to bridge me to surgery. The hip injection gave me immediate relief. I was able to put on 20,000 steps at the state fair the following day!
It was a great surgical experience from anesthesia, perfect spinal, pain control, physical therapy, and the overnight stay with the EXCEL program. I am six weeks post-surgery and thanks to Dr. Johnson and team, I’ll be out on the pickleball courts soon!
