TCO Supports Girls on the Run Twin Cities as Presenting Partner

Jan. 24, 2019 (MINNEAPOLIS) — Building on a strong five year relationship, Girls on the Run Twin Cities is proud to name orthopedic and sports medicine leader Twin Cities Orthopedics (TCO) the 2019 presenting partner of the physical activity-based, positive youth development program that inspires girls grades 3-8 to be healthy, joyful and confident.

TCO will support Girls on the Run’s expansion into new communities across the greater Twin Cities metro area, highlighted by events including the upcoming Girls on the Run 5K and volunteer coach training. By increasing their support of Girls on the Run, TCO will directly impact the lives of more than 5,000 girls at 200 sites this year.

“Community is the heart and soul of our mission at Twin Cities Orthopedics,” Heather Lang, TCO Vice President of Marketing, said. “We are proud to have the chance to work alongside so many amazing individuals through local activities and events. Girls on the Run Twin Cities believes in the positive impact organizations can make in the lives of kids and families, and we are grateful for this opportunity to expand our partnership.”

Girls on the Run is a 10-week program that teaches critical life skills, encourages personal development and fosters team building and community service. Volunteer coaches utilize a curriculum to engage teams of girls in fun and interactive lessons. Girls on the Run Twin Cities serves girls at more than 200 locations across the Twin Cities, Rochester and Northfield.

“We are thrilled to embark on this exciting partnership with Twin Cities Orthopedics,” Mary Uran, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Twin Cities, said. “TCO will not only bring their expertise in injury prevention, treatment and recovery to our girls, coaches and families, but will also bring their commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of the communities they serve, similar to GOTR.”

One GOTR coach described her experience: “Girls on the Run exponentially expands the reach and impact of my volunteer hours. There’s nowhere else I can drop 90 minutes of time and witness this depth of transformative change. GOTR’s research-based curriculum is easy for me to share and proven to improve girls’ self-worth, body image and behavioral/emotional functioning. When coaching, I get to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident while creatively integrating running in a way that is engaging and just plain fun. It’s a well-balanced mix of offering life-skills training and physical activity, both of which young girls desperately need in this day and age.  GOTR’s access and inclusion initiative is the icing on the cake, removing barriers so all girls can participate.”

About Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Participants develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The ten-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5k event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. What started as a small start-up serving 24 girls in the spring of 2012 has spread quickly across the Twin Cities and into southeastern Minnesota to serve 3,400 girls at more than 200 sites in the spring of 2019.
