Andrew M. Schmiesing, MD, is a board certified, sports medicine fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon. He completed his medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School and his residency at the University of Minnesota. He then completed a sports medicine fellowship at Kaiser Permanente in Orange County, California. Here, he gained further experience in the management of sports injuries as well as a more extensive training in arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder, including ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic and open management of shoulder instability as well as other procedures. Dr. Schmiesing’s practice with TCO consists of sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, as well as an interest in joint replacement, including hip, knee, and shoulder, both traditional and reverse shoulder replacements. He performs robotic assisted total knee replacements. He is also an assistant team physician for Stillwater High School.
Dr. Schmiesing grew up in Stillwater, MN and attended Stillwater High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He then attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and played football and baseball. After college, he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and played three seasons of professional baseball. He and his wife have three boys and live in Stillwater. During his free time, Dr. Schmiesing enjoys playing sports with his boys, traveling to the mountains, and working outside.
Elbow care, including cubital tunnel syndrome, distal bicep and triceps injuries, treatment of the overhead athlete, ulnar collateral ligament repair and reconstruction (Tommy John surgery)
Fracture care, including surgical and non-surgical management of common fractures
Hip care, including hip osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, and total hip replacement through a posterior approach
Knee care, including ACL tears, meniscus injuries (including meniscal repair, root repairs, and transplant), patellar instability, chondral injuries, knee malalignment, quadriceps and patellar tendon injuries, knee osteoarthritis, total knee replacement including robotic assisted, OCD lesion, MCL reconstruction, PCL reconstruction, and partial knee replacement
Pediatric care, including sports related injury, pain, strains/sprains, and common fractures
Shoulder care, including treatment of rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability/labral injuries with arthroscopic and open techniques, shoulder (AC) separation, proximal bicep tendon injures, rotator cuff arthropathy, primary osteoarthritis of the shoulder, and reverse and anatomic total shoulder replacement
Sports medicine, including surgical and non-surgical treatment and/or triage of all aspects of sports medicine for all ages
