Selecting Foot-Friendly Sandals

When it comes to sandal shopping, Melanie Berg, D.P.M., with St. Croix Orthopaedics knows how challenging it can be to find sandals that balance both style and comfort.  As a podiatric surgeon, Dr. Berg offers some great advice on what to look for when shopping for that perfect pair of summer sandals.

“I understand how hard it is to find fashionable sandals for summer that are comfortable and supportive.  Finally, there are some options for people that typically cannot wear sandals without suffering for days afterward.  When looking for a good sandal, I recommend a hard sole that does not flex in the arch.  This will prevent strain on the arch when walking and also protect the feet from the external environment.  There should be some cushion for shock absorption and an arch support to protect the plantar fascia and muscles on the bottom of the foot.  Adjustable straps are helpful for people that are prone to swelling, especially on hot and humid days.”

Some orthopaedic-approved shoes include those found at www.drcomfort.com and Orthaheel shoes at www.vionicshoes.com.
