Twin Cities Orthopedics sports medicine team emphasizes injury prevention for young athletes

High school sports are well under way this fall, and with athletics being big part of the schedule for students and families, the risk of injuries increases. On Tuesday, FOX 9 aired a story [WATCH] about an Edina High School football player, his shoulder surgery and recovery with the help of Twin Cities Orthopedics and Dr. Greg Lervick.

Athletes run the risk of injuries due to overuse if they are active in a single sport year-round. TCO doesn’t just focus on orthopedic surgery and recovery; it also emphasizes cross-training to make injury prevention part of the training plan.

Recommendations to help young athletes remain injury-free include:

  • Appropriate rest periods for growing muscles
  • Mixing in different activities to avoid overuse of the same body parts
  • Rehydration and replenishing periods
  • Allowing recovery time for maturing and growing tissues

TCO is the Official Sports Medicine Provider for Edina as well as several other area high schools, colleges and pro teams.
