My first appointment with Dr. Bircher was on April 11, 2024, and it took all of a few seconds for him to realize that I needed surgery. I had left hip replacement surgery on April 25, 2024. WOW, what a quick turnaround. I went from hardly being able to walk to getting up and walking without pain just a few hours after surgery. The total care team were so professional and caring. They answered all my questions and helped me in every way I needed.

Within 24 hours after checking into the hospital, I was on my way home to start my recovery. The care team said the best medicine for me was to walk, walk, walk, so that’s what I did. Now just over 2 months after surgery, I bought a new pair of roller blades so I could skate around the lake to get ready for the ice hockey season in the fall. Haven’t been able to play in many years. I am so impressed with Twin Cities Orthopedics and would recommend them to anyone in need of their services. I was referred to Dr. O’Neill by another orthopedic doctor who felt the best way to fix all that was wrong with my hip was to replace it. At 56 years old, a hip replacement certainly was not on my radar. Dr. O’Neill and his team were incredibly kind and took the time to answer all my questions and encouraged me to take all the time I needed to make a decision.

I am so grateful to have my life back and be able to do all the things I enjoy!! The surgery and the EXCEL program were amazing! I was walking without the assistive device on day 3. I also rented the NICE machine, and it was a game changer for icing after surgery. I drove 2.5 hours one way to see Dr O’Neill and would do it again, if needed. Dr. O’Neill performed anterior hip replacement surgery and answered all of my questions. The care Dr. O’Neill and his team provide is wonderful. In less than two weeks I could handle any discomfort with just Tylenol and Ibuprofen. It has now been ten weeks since surgery and I can go about all my normal activities, including golf and extended walks. Dr. Meisterling and his team were outstanding for my hip replacement procedure and my postoperative care! I have no pain, and the rehab went extremely well. In February I finally scheduled my hip replacement surgery. I was in so much discomfort and pain. This was my first time at TCO, and I was assigned to Dr. Bircher. After my first exam with him I knew I was in good hands. I had my surgery, and it was the best thing I could’ve done for myself. WOW is what comes to mind when I think about the before and after my total hip replacement surgery performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill at TCO. At age 58, I didn’t think that I was “old” enough to have a joint replacement, but my active lifestyle became more and more limited. Once the “bone on bone” feeling started in my left hip, I knew it was time. The pain was prohibitive, and I could no longer enjoy my favorite activities, even walking! I have to say, the minimally invasive surgery went perfectly under Dr. O’Neill’s expert care. Within 9 days post-surgery, I was walking around the house without assistance. I feel as though I have my life back!

My left hip required replacement, so I selected Dr. Bircher at TCO, which turned out to be the best decision to treat both of my hip pain issues. He is caring, knowledgeable, expresses confidence in the treatment options, and always had time to answer my questions. He replaced my left hip with no follow-up issues after the recovery. I was able to resume normal activities as much as my right hip would allow. The right hip ended up needing hip revision surgery after extensive tests determined the original hip replacement performed by a different physician was loose and causing pain when I walked. Again, Dr. Bircher and his care team did an excellent job preparing me for what lay ahead as this one was more complicated than my left hip replacement. I am now 6 months post hip revision surgery, and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. I highly recommend Dr. James Bircher, his care team including his assistant Kari Gabrielse if you are seeking relief from hip pain.
