Sports Medicine Fellowship

About the Fellowship

Twin Cities Orthopedics offers a one-year ACGME accredited Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship beginning August 1st and concluding July 31st.

Twin Cities Orthopedics is a renowned center for orthopedic care, treating everyday people, alongside professional and recreational athletes. This fellowship will, therefore, provide extensive training in musculoskeletal clinical experiences and surgical procedures.

The faculty is composed of orthopedic sports medicine and team physicians working in collaboration with one another and with our medical partners in the office, in the training room, on the playing field and in an educational setting, with a commitment to the pursuit of clinical excellence. Education and research are integral to the commitment.

Current Fellows

Lee D Headshot

Dustin Lee, MD
Dustin grew up in a rural farming community in southeastern Minnesota and completed a 6-year enlistment in the Air Force before beginning his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While in North Carolina he met his beautiful wife, Haley. Dustin remained at UNC-Chapel Hill for medical school then returned to Minnesota for his orthopedic residency training at the Mayo Clinic. He enjoys traveling with Haley and has a particular interest in outdoor activities. His favorite hobby is trying to catch walleye with his dad. Dustin and Haley are looking forward to their year in the Twin Cities before beginning his practice with Mayo Clinic in Red Wing, Minnesota.

Rasmussen M Headshot

Matthew Rasmussen, MD
Matthew grew up in Chaska, Minnesota and attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana where he graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. He then went to work as a research engineer at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado for two years before returning to attend medical school at the University of Minnesota. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Michigan alongside his wife, Chloe, who completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Matt enjoys spending his free time outside and up at the cabin with his family. They are excited to move back to the Twin Cities with the addition of their beautiful daughter, Quinn.

Educational Experience

Our fellowship values and supports professional development by ensuring our fellows participate in:

Sports Medicine fellows function, with supervision, as team physicians for local high schools and colleges. The fellowship also provides exposure to the care of professional athletes from several different sports teams as well as other world-class competitors. A Week in the Life of an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellow

“I am extraordinarily fortunate to be receiving advanced training from world-renowned faculty in orthopedic sports medicine here at Twin Cities Orthopedics. My time is spent in the clinic seeing patients, in the operating room, working on the sideline or training room, and doing research.” 2020-2021 Fellow

In the words of our 2020-2021 Fellow, here is a weekly breakdown:

Research Studies & Publications

Faculty and fellows are dedicated to and highly involved in research throughout the year. Fellows are given dedicated academic time for research projects, data collection, and manuscript submissions. Fellows are encouraged to develop their own potential research projects in collaboration with faculty or to join in with ongoing faculty research projects. Our Research Department will support the fellows research activities with power analyses, statistical analysis and figure composition as needed. Fellows are required to participate in a research project and to submit to a peer-reviewed journal.

Scroll down to view current fellow research studies and publications. To view current and past research studies and publications from the faculty, download our Annual Reports from the TCO Foundation website.

Mentorship

Faculty and fellows work collaboratively to understand the physical examination, plain and stress radiographs, and CT/MRI scans for the workup of simple and complex sports medicine pathologies. It is expected that this collaboration will lead to future interactions between faculty and the sports medicine fellows as they initiate their career.
