Michelle thought her horse jumping days were over after a scary crash and serious injury. But thanks to TCO, she’s back in the saddle again:

“In 2017, my horse, Skip the Champagne, and I crashed during the jump-off at a competition in Iowa. I stayed securely in the saddle as Skip fell to the ground. We both landed on my left shoulder. Skip rolled over me twice before safely getting back on his feet. Thank God, Skip was fine.

X-rays revealed that I fractured my left shoulder. The following day, I met with Dr. Jason Dieterle at TCO Stillwater. Dr. Dieterle told me that I had a serious break and asked about my future goals. I told him I wanted to return to riding and jumping my horses competitively. However, my fracture was so complex that he hesitated to give me any assurances about jumping competitively again. Based on my fracture and what was left for him to work with, Dr. Dieterle told me a reverse total shoulder replacement was my best option, and the surgery was a success.

Afterward, Dr. Dieterle recommended 6 months of strenuous physical therapy, and said he would decide whether I could get back on my horse when it was complete. Thankfully, Dr. Dieterle saw the great progress I made and cautiously gave me permission to ride at a walk only and warned me not to fall off again. I quickly reminded him that I didn’t fall off my horse, Skip fell, and I went down with him. He said that was just a technicality haha.

One year after the accident, I returned to the same jumping competition, competing on all three of my horses, including Skip.

At our annual visits, Dr. Dieterle continues to be impressed with the return of my range of motion. He shakes his head and tells me to keep doing whatever it is I’m doing.

In December, I will be turning 67, and am so thankful to be healthy and back on my horses. I will forever be grateful that God placed Dr. Dieterle in my path.”

I would like to recognize Dr. Maura Hartigan! She is an amazing doctor! I had cortisone injections into my spine area. Dr. Hartigan and her team of nurses were fabulous! They were all so kind and attentive. Dr. Hartigan was so personable and very knowledgeable. She explains everything so thoroughly, listened to my concerns, and never made me feel rushed. She followed up one week later, and again, was so thorough and took the time to explain everything. I would highly recommend Dr. Hartigan If you have any back /neck/spine issues. I want to give a huge shout out to Dr. Maria Ryan! She was so thorough and took her time trying to figure out where my pain and issues were coming from. I knew she genuinely cared about me and wanted to help me feel better. She listened to me, she asked questions, and then came up with a plan. I never felt rushed. Dr. Hoel performed a C5-6 discectomy and fusion at M Health Fairview for my neck, shoulder, and arm pain. Wow, my pain was completely gone! I’m now 9 weeks post-surgery. I am still totally pain free and almost 100% back to normal daily life.

From the moment I met Dr. Hoel, I had complete confidence in his ability to help me, although I had doubts that I would be able to get rid of all the pain. We initially tried more conservative treatment (rest and injection) but that did not afford much relief from the constant pain in my neck, shoulder and arm. Once we decided together to go ahead with the surgery, I felt positive that it was the right decision.

Dr. Hoel was very open and honest, yet reassuring, about the procedure and expected outcomes. His care coordinator, Julie, really worked hard to help me prepare for the surgery, navigating COVID requirements and a short timeline so that I was able to go on a long-planned vacation just 4 weeks after surgery. The reception staff is so nice! I had a long wait (not TCO’s fault) sitting in a wheelchair in the waiting area. They kept checking on me to see if I was doing okay or if I needed anything. They were awesome!

Right away at my first appointment with Dr. Owen O’Neill, I felt confident that his knowledge and experience with hip surgery made him an excellent choice for my procedure. I immediately decided to go ahead with his recommendation of hip replacement. Working with his team after the appointment was extremely easy and I was scheduled for surgery within three weeks.

I would recommend anterior hip replacement to anyone who needs hip replacement surgery. Dr. O’Neill and his team had me walking two hours after surgery. Three days later, I felt comfortable waking without the walker. After two weeks of increasing my walking with more household activities, I felt confident in driving my van. Eventually I was back to hiking on local nature trails, which I hadn’t done in ten months. Six weeks after surgery, I got back on my Harley Davidson and could ride again, which I also wasn’t able to do for ten months.

I would recommend Dr. O’Neill and his team to anyone who would benefit from having hip replacement surgery. They allowed me to get my life back. I was on the road to a total sedentary life before my surgery. I was pain free only when I was sitting or lying down. Thank you Dr. O’Neill.

It’s been one year since my total knee replacements. I had my first one repaired on Oct 23, 2020 and the other one on Dec 3, 2020, exactly 6 weeks apart. I cannot say enough about the care that I received from Dr. Barry, the EXCEL Program nursing team, my physical therapist, Chris Kuhn, and Rebecca Munson, PA. The kindness shown to me during this time was amazing!

On my first visit with Dr. Barry, I expressed to him how important it was for me to get back to normal life, which included kickboxing. He thought that was possible to attain with hard work. With the direction of Chris and a list of at home physical therapy, I went back to kickboxing in March of 2021 and it feels amazing. I could not have done this without the help of this wonderful team! For the first time in a very long time, I have straight legs and almost pain free!!! Thank you everyone!!!

This was my second total shoulder replacement with Dr. Kelly and it went very well! Both shoulder function normally and with no pain. It was the best thing I ever did.
