I have now had both of my hips replaced. The first one, in 2018, was a lateral approach and the second one in May 2022. The second one was performed by Dr. Owen O’Neill and was a minimally invasive anterior approach.

I recovered much faster with the second surgery and was able to move around easier right after surgery. I was walking without the aid of a walker or cane much sooner and was walking about a block after the first week. I also did not have to have physical therapy with the second surgery.

I did have a fair amount of swelling in my thigh, but as I approach 4 months, the swelling is mostly gone unless I sit in the car for long periods of time or I am up on my feet for most of the day. It diminishes quickly once I sit and elevate my leg. There is pain and discomfort with this type of surgery, but it diminished much quicker and I needed less pain medication.

Both of my legs are now the same length, which makes activity much easier and I do not have the sharp, stabbing pain when stepping down on a very arthritic hip.

I recommend the minimally invasive anterior approach and would seek care again from Dr. O’Neill, if I needed more orthopedic surgery. I found him to be very competent, caring and approachable.

I am 72 years old, am 4 days post op and walking around! I cannot differentiate my new hip from my remaining hip. I highly recommend Dr. O’Neill. The man is a rock star!

At my first appointment, Dr. Lewis could immediately tell how much pain I was experiencing. He had a couple MRI’s from my primary physician and ordered a CT scan. A surgery date was set up, but after Dr. Lewis reviewed the CT scan, he called me with the info of the healing needed to happen in the pelvic bone area before he could do surgery. Surgery was canceled and he gave me suggestions of what needed to happen before surgery. He set up another appointment to see me in a few weeks. After the next appointment when the pelvic bone changes had not been resolved, Dr. Lewis contacted 4 orthopedic surgeons from around the country to discuss my situation. He then scheduled the surgery, which he had spent 4 weeks prior planning. Surgery included a bone graft and 3 screws in addition to the hip shell ball and shaft. I am 7 weeks out of surgery, walking without any aid, am pain free and planning my active life ahead!

I have had hip issues all my life. I was born with both hip sockets dislocated and wore a special cast from the waist down, then went on to a special device that I wore at night to keep my legs straight. Anyway, I finally saw that a hip replacement might be in order since I was bone on bone. Leg and thigh pain with groin pain were a real drag. But I am 4 days out of hip replacement and although I’m still in pain, I am up walking every hour and it’s already SO different than what I had been dealing with. Dr. Vorlicky did an ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL job. Hopes to more recovery and painless days ahead!

Dr. O’Neill and his staff are top notch. From the initial consultation, to the post-surgical follow up and office visits, I couldn’t be happier. My situation was unique in that it required additional pre-surgical bone scans and input from my Cardiologist and Anti-Coagulant team. The entire experience was fantastic! My surgery with Dr. Arntson went great and my whole care team was phenomenal. I was walking immediately and was relatively pain free within 10 to 14 days. It’s been 6 weeks since my surgery and there’s virtually nothing I can’t do, and all of it is pain free. Everything was fantastic!

After delaying the hip replacement for six years, I now know what a mistake that procrastination was. Walking within hours of the surgery and even climbing stairs was a pleasant surprise and bonus with only 24+ hours in the hospital. Four years ago, I was experiencing some hip discomfort on my right side. I just assumed it was because of my active lifestyle and some muscle soreness. There were 2 people I worked with that both had hip replacements from Dr. Owen O’Neill, so they encouraged me to seek him out. Sure enough, there was some arthritis that was causing that discomfort. I endured it for 4 years because it was never that painful. However, it reached a “bone-on-bone” stage where it needed replacing. I was prepared for the worst in my mind, but the entire process was so smooth and worry free, that it was hard to believe I actually had a major surgical procedure. I was up on my feet and off the walker within 3-4 days. Swimming, walking and riding my bike within 3 weeks, and back to golfing at 8 weeks. I jokingly asked Dr. O’Neill if my golf game would improve after this procedure, and he said if it did, he would like to take credit for that as well and maybe start marketing his services in that manner. Let me say that my golf game is no better, but no worse, as I am back taking some much needed golf lessons. The entire staff at TCO has been absolutely top notch all around!
